The Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing held a commencement ceremony in Huntington for the Machinist Technology/CNC Program.  Congratulations to Brandon Baker, Christopher Burgess, Joseph Funderbunk, Michael Gibson, Greg May, Randall Pennington, Christopher Rafferty, Estel Scarberry and Clilfford Yeager.  The following students successfully completed the RCBI Machinist Technology 1-Year Certificate Program: Billy Booth, Mark Cooper, Adam Hayden, Josh Jeffrey, Jacob Kearns, David Powell, James Reid and Joshua Whitley.   Adult students enrolled in the Machinist Technology/CNC Program receive specialized hands-on and classroom instruction that prepares them for local jobs in the metalworking sector.  CNC Machinist runs computer-operated equipment to create machine parts, tools and other mass-produced items.  The curriculum is designed with industry involvement so students learn job-specific skills that are needed in the workplace.  The RCBI program specifically develops hand-on skills working on conventional manual machines as well as computer-numeric-controlled (CNC) equipment.  Participating students also have an option through Mountwest Community & Technical College to earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. The following students completed the RCBI Welding Technology Program: Sarah Damron, Adam Hatten, Lindsey Maynard II, Mark Russell, Christopher Tilson and Tyler Varney. The RCBI Welding Technology Program also has a partnership with Mountwest Community & Technical College and the Cabell County Career Technology Center.  The RCBI Welding program prepares individuals to meet the demands of area manufacturers.  Welding skills are developed and reinforced through a proven, hands-on approach with intensive student-instructor interaction. Dr. Steven L. Brown, Dean, Career and Technical Division Mountwest Community & Technical College spoke about how rapid changes in technology have driven a continuous need for employers to seek workers with advanced knowledge and skills.  Dr. Brown said “Today’s workers need to possess the skills necessary to operate sophisticated equipment in the workplace in order keep business competitive in the world marketplace.” David Lieving, President & CEO of the Huntington Area Development Council (HADCO) provided the keynote address.  Lieving pointed out that metalworking sector has a long history in the Huntington area and it remains a target sector for HADCO.  While many of the graduates had already lined up jobs prior to graduation, he mentioned growth opportunities are present with some area employers who are currently seeking skilled workers.  DARCO/HG Medical is currently looking for skilled machinist and machine operators as they continue to expand operations in Huntington.  Hercules International also has current openings for a Machinist and a CNC Lathe Operator.
